An Animal Story

This story was sent by a critical care nurse to the author of a book I found at a rummage sale this morning called "Animals As Teachers & Healers: True Stories & Relfections" by Susan Chernak McElroy: "In my profession, I have heard of stories of animals who sacrifice themselves to save the life of a human companion. One of the most memorable stories was of a German Shepherd covering a toddler with its body during a house fire. When the firefighters removed the dog's body, they were surprised to find the toddler still allive and suffering from only minor burns and smoke inhalation. The dog had been purchased to protect the family--it gave its life to do so."
